Although oil filled radiators offer a wonderful heat source for the home, they have to be used in a safe manner. Certain precautions have to be taken so as to avoid any accidents occuring. Following the simple measures which are preventative in nature will lead to fewer accidents.

It is important not to connect your oil filled radiator to the electricity supply via an extension lead. Many extension wires are just not capable of coping with the wattage that is required by the oil filled radiator. It is common knowledge that extension wires only support a maximum wattage, and this is sometimes not enough for radiator requirements. But it is also an unfortunate fact that many people are not aware of this, which means thin wires of inadequate extension leads can start overheating when there is a wattage they are not used to, meaning a fire risk could be imminent.

For those who wish their oil filled radiator to be controlled using a timer switch, be sure to purchase a radiator with an integrated switch. A good reason for this is the fact that these radiators are actually designed to switch themselves off if they start to overheat. If external timers are used on these radiators, they could have the effect of compromising the safety switch, making it useless, with all the dangers that entails.

Also, ensure children are unable to move or push the radiator in question. One issue of pushing the radiator too far is the wire can turn into a tripping hazard. It can also result in the connection being damaged and the radiator could cause a short circuit. You should make sure it is in a secure location and cannot be moved about by children as it could be pushed over and be damaged resulting in the hot oil leaking out.

Taking these precautions can make sure that your oil filled radiator remains a great yet safe source of heat during the cold weather.
